As part of the permanent inspections carried out by public services to verify compliance with current regulations, personnel from the Maritime Police of the Port Captaincy of Puerto Natales, in conjunction with officials from the National Customs Service and the Investigative Police of Chile (PDI), carried out an inspection and determined the seizure of a British-flagged yacht anchored in the Señoret Channel.
The procedure, developed aboard the Rescue Service Launch LSR-4431 Kawesqar, allowed verifying the administrative situation of the vessel and notifying those responsible of the measure, after detecting evidence associated with the use of the temporary admission regime for foreign non-commercial vessels for the performance of remunerated tourist activities.
The regional director of the Punta Arenas Customs, Reinhold Andronoff, commented that "again, and after meticulous analysis work by our officials, another yacht was detected that was being used to carry out illegal tourist trips in our Region, something that constitutes a clear violation of customs regulations. For this reason, and as in previous cases where we have inspected this type of trade, we work jointly with the PDI and the Navy, which reinforces inter-agency efforts focusing on protecting the Magallanes region and its citizens."
Likewise, during the procedure, the vessel's crew members were inspected, detecting infringements of Law N° 21.325 on Migration and Foreigners, as it was found that foreign citizens had carried out remunerated activities while maintaining tourist immigration status.
In this regard, Subprefect Lautaro Guajardo, head of the Migration and International Police Department Puerto Natales, indicated that "within the framework of inter-agency work, detectives from Migration and International Police Puerto Natales, in conjunction with personnel from Customs and the Maritime Police, carried out the inspection of a yacht that was off the coast of Puerto Natales. During the procedure, it was established that two foreign citizens, of Italian and British nationalities, with tourist immigration status, were working without authorization to carry out remunerated activities, violating the Migration and Foreigners Law. For this reason, both were reported to the National Migration Service."
At the time of the procedure, the vessel remained anchored in the Señoret Channel with five crew members on board, of British, Italian, and Chilean nationality.
Furthermore, the Port Captain of Puerto Natales, Lieutenant Commander Rafael González pointed out that "this procedure reflects the importance of coordinated work between the Chilean Navy, the Investigative Police, and the National Customs Service. Inter-agency inspection strengthens compliance with maritime, customs, and immigration regulations, contributing to ensuring that activities carried out in our jurisdiction comply with the current legal framework."
The Maritime Authority reiterated that it will continue to carry out joint inspections with the competent bodies, aimed at safeguarding compliance with national legislation and promoting a safe and regulated development of maritime activities in the Magallanes Region.
