The BYD Changzhou departed from DP World San Antonio after completing its first operation in a Chilean port. The vessel also made its inaugural call at the terminal and carried out the largest unloading of new energy vehicles (100% electric and plug-in hybrids).
"The car carrier BYD Changzhou finished unloading 1,918 BYD vehicles yesterday Wednesday (August 12) afternoon and departed today Thursday (August 13) at 6 AM from DP World's multipurpose terminal in San Antonio, thus concluding its first voyage to Chile. According to BYD, this is the largest shipment of new energy vehicles received in our country in a single maritime operation," DP World communicated.
For his part, Curtis Doiron, CEO of DP World in Chile, stated that "we are very happy to have received this modern BYD vessel with the brand's electric vehicles for the local market for the first time in Chile. This arrival confirms the human and technological leadership of DP World's terminal in San Antonio for a safe and efficient arrival of vehicles and cargo to Chile."
In turn, Rodrigo González, Commercial Manager of BYD Chile, detailed that "this new unloading represents much more than the arrival of vehicles; it is a concrete sign of how electromobility continues to consolidate in Chile. The explosively growing demand for new energy vehicles shows that consumers increasingly value innovative, efficient, and sustainable technologies. At BYD, we will continue to strengthen our presence in the country to offer an increasingly wide range of mobility solutions that accompany this transformation."
The executive added that the unloading is part of a larger logistics plan that will continue with new maritime operations. Thus, more than 3,500 BYD vehicles will arrive in the Chilean market during August, while by the end of 2026, more than 10,000 new vehicles will have arrived in Chile and will be available at the different BYD dealerships throughout the country.
In this context, the Undersecretary of Energy, Hugo Briones, expressed that "the arrival of this historic shipment confirms that electromobility is ceasing to be a niche technology to become an increasingly accessible alternative for families and businesses in our country. As a Government, we will continue to promote the necessary conditions to accelerate this transition, expanding charging infrastructure and strengthening policies that allow us to move towards cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable transport."
After the departure of the BYD Changzhou from Site 4-5, the car carrier Glorious Leader entered the same location to unload a total of 1,250 vehicles. Subsequently, the Glovis Summit will replicate the procedure to unload 2,214 units.
It is worth remembering that the concessionaire of the Port of San Antonio receives more than 90% of the vehicles entering the country. In 2025, DP World mobilized 267,411 imported automobiles, 13% more than in 2024.
Last year, the monthly volume increased from 17,000 to 21,000 units, also marking the reception of the largest shipment of new cars in Chile's history. This milestone was achieved after the operation of the Morning Lily in December 2025, which unloaded 6,338 units.
