The Regional Customs Directorate carried out a new inspection procedure at the Port of Arica that prevented the illegal departure from the country of 429 kilos of copper corresponding to stolen telecommunications cables, which were intended to be exported to China under the declaration of scrap metal.
The discovery occurred during a physical inspection carried out by officials from the Inspection Unit in the Arica Port Terminal (TPA) sector, where an export operation covering the shipment of metallic material was inspected.
After the verifications carried out and the analysis of the available background information, it was established that part of the merchandise corresponded to copper cables belonging to a telecommunications company that had been previously reported as stolen.
Given this information, Arica Customs proceeded to seize the merchandise and file a complaint for the crime of smuggling, in accordance with the powers established in the Customs Ordinance, remitting the background information to the Public Ministry for the corresponding legal purposes.
The regional director (s) of Arica Customs, James Alarcón, highlighted that this procedure reflects the permanent work carried out by the inspection teams to safeguard foreign trade and prevent illicit goods from being incorporated into international flows.
"This procedure demonstrates the analytical and inspection capacity of our teams, who managed to detect an operation that sought to remove illicit material from the country. Our work aims to protect the logistics chain, safeguard legitimate foreign trade, and actively collaborate with the prosecution of crimes that affect strategic sectors for the country's development," said Alarcón.
This discovery adds to another procedure carried out by the Arica Regional Customs during April, when officials detected 226 kilos of copper hidden in the structures of a pickup truck attempting to enter the country through the Chacalluta Border Complex.
