India's basmati rice exports have decreased during the first four months of the current year. This figure is attributed to restrictions on trade flows to the Persian Gulf due to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran.
It has been reported that "the country's rice exports between January and April decreased by 1.3% year-on-year, standing at 8.39 million metric tons, according to officials who preferred to remain anonymous as they were not authorized to speak to the media."
Specifically, basmati rice saw a 7% decrease during the aforementioned period, reaching 2.3 million metric tons.
Basmati has a strong presence in the markets of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates.
Finally, it was explained that "maritime insurance and freight costs have increased since US and Israeli airstrikes initiated the war against Iran in late February, causing disruptions to maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. This has affected the demand for non-basmati rice from African buyers," according to an exporter based in Kakinada, in southeastern India.
