The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Pérez Mackenna, visited the Port of Singapore, the second largest on the planet after Shanghai, China. The visit allowed him to learn about the work that PSA Singapore has carried out to achieve high standards of security and efficiency.
"Singapore has made great strides in port security, and we have heard from them how they manage it, but also how they have achieved their levels of efficiency. Chile is an exporting country, and having efficient ports is also fundamental for the export effort," said the minister.
The Port of Singapore is a fully automated container terminal and one of the largest in the world, with the capacity to operate the largest container ships. Its facilities comprise 56 berths, more than 21 kilometers, an area of 887 hectares, and connections to 600 port facilities around the planet.
Subsequently, the minister attended a briefing on artificial intelligence and digitalization policy, offered by Singapore's Ministry of Digital Development and Information, where he learned about the Asian nation's national policy on this matter and how it has been implemented in different areas of society, especially at the governmental level.
It is worth remembering that the Free Trade Agreement between the Pacific Alliance (made up of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru) and Singapore, along with the letters exchanged on the occasion of its signing, was signed in Bahía Málaga, Colombia, on January 26, 2022.
The agreement aims to facilitate trade, encourage investment, and promote cooperation in strategic areas such as the digital economy and innovation.
Meanwhile, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) reported a record of 3.22 billion gross tons (GT) in vessel arrivals and 44.66 million TEUs in container handling achieved in 2025, which represented an increase of 3.5% and 8.6% respectively compared to 2024.
