Sweden's highest court has ratified the ruling authorizing the handover to Ukraine of a cargo ship seized in the Baltic Sea. The vessel is suspected of illegally transporting grain from Russian-occupied territory.
The court dismissed the appeal by the owners of the Caffa, which was detained in March off the coast of southern Sweden for sailing under a false flag and violating maritime safety laws due to a lack of safe navigation conditions.
Ukraine has requested the vessel as part of an investigation into alleged war crimes related to the appropriation and extraction of goods from Russian-occupied territory.
Lower Swedish courts indicated that such actions could constitute a war crime under local legislation, allowing Sweden to transfer the vessel and corresponding evidence to Ukraine.
"The Supreme Court does not grant authorization to appeal. Therefore, the decision of the Court of Appeal is final," the highest court declared in a ruling dated August 4.
Most of the 11 crew members of the Caffa, owned by Caffa Shipping Limited, were Russian, according to police reports at the time of the seizure.
