DP World completed the first delivery of finished vehicles from Zeebrugge (Belgium) to Aiud (Romania), thus inaugurating a new rail corridor connecting Western and Southeastern Europe.
The initial shipment, destined for Chisinau (Moldova), marks DP World's first end-to-end managed vehicle rail operation in Europe. From Aiud, the vehicles will continue their journey by road to their final destination, using the area as a regional distribution hub for finished vehicles, serving Romania and neighboring markets.
This pilot project is part of DP World's broader strategy to consolidate Aiud's role as a regional logistics hub for the automotive sector. The company plans to introduce a regular service, with bi-weekly operations, in the second half of 2026. DP World also plans to connect Aiud with other European ports, including Koper (Slovenia), in the same manner.
Dragos Calin, Freight Director for the Balkans at DP World, stated that "automotive companies are looking to reduce their exposure to long-distance road transport. By combining rail and road in a single integrated service, we offer customers greater reliability, lower emissions, and a scalable solution as trade flows in Europe continue to evolve."
Svitlana Balaban, CEO of DP World Romania, declared that "our strategy is to build a more connected European logistics network, creating new trade corridors and offering customers a wider variety of options for transporting goods across the continent. Aiud is a key piece of this vision, as it creates new connections between Western European ports and Southeastern European markets."
The Aiud multimodal logistics terminal, inaugurated in 2024 after DP World's 21 million euro investment, covers an area of 180,000 m². Located next to the A10 motorway and connected to Romania's national railway network, the terminal offers container handling and storage services, customs services, and freight transport.
