On Sunday, May 31, a railway accident occurred in the link section to San Salvador Station, north of Calama. The incident involved the derailment of two locomotives linked to the Antofagasta Railway (FCAB), which were moving a convoy loaded with copper cathodes.
In line with a preliminary report from the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (Senapred), the train was transporting 1,895 tons of copper destined for Antofagasta, derailing near Gate Four of Codelco's Radomiro Tomic Division.
"Following the accident, which occurred this Sunday, May 31, FCAB activated its internal response protocols, deploying specialized teams on site and Industrial Protection personnel. The crew is in good condition and without injuries," FCAB communicated.
"As part of the emergency actions, the area was secured, the operational conditions of the sector were verified, and the corresponding technical evaluation was initiated. According to preliminary information, no spills or environmental impact were recorded as it involves cathode cargo," it added.
"The company will continue to provide official information as the contingency control and safe recovery of railway operations progress," the company's statement concluded.
In line with information that emerged from the case, the railway formation had an approximate length of 350 meters. Likewise, Carabineros (Chilean police) were in charge of securing the sector, carrying out surveillance and operational support tasks while the removal of materials and the corresponding investigations into the case were carried out.
