Hamburg Activates Rail Routes Amidst Rhine Water Crisis

The Port of Hamburg offers combined transport alternatives between Cologne and Duisburg to address the low water levels in the Rhine River, which often leads to restrictions in river transport.

These routes are operated by HGK Logistics and Intermodal GmbH and IGS Intermodal Container Logistics GmbH. By operating independently of river conditions, these rail connections represent an economically efficient, environmentally friendly, and, above all, system-safe alternative compared to river transport on the Rhine.

The rail services offer advantages not only for exports: import containers from Hamburg can also be efficiently transported to Cologne and Duisburg. Thanks to the direct connection to Hamburg's port terminals, cargo owners benefit from predictable transit times, great flexibility, and a smooth transport chain in both directions.
