The Sandvik DR411i surface drill rig arrived at Terminal Puerto Coquimbo (TPC) aboard the vessel BBC Rhine, as part of a logistics operation linked to mining activity. The unloading of the equipment was carried out as a project cargo operation, coordinated with various actors in the logistics chain involved.
"The DR411i is a surface drill rig developed by Sandvik for open-pit mining operations. The equipment performs precise drilling and has automated functions that facilitate the work of operators," communicated the concessionaire of the Port of Coquimbo.
"Its design is also intended for simple maintenance, which helps keep the equipment available in the field for as long as possible. The new drill rig arrived in Chile through Terminal Puerto Coquimbo," it added.
For his part, Maximiliano Davico, Business Line Manager of Rotary Drills at Sandvik, indicated that "for Sandvik, the arrival of this DR411i in Chile represents a significant milestone for the Andean region and the Southern Cone, as it introduces a high-capacity drilling rig to national mining, designed to meet the demands of large-scale mining operations. Weighing close to 100 tons, its arrival and subsequent transfer require a logistics operation commensurate with the dimensions and characteristics of the equipment."
In line with TPC's information, the choice of the Port of Coquimbo responds to its capabilities for receiving and handling this type of cargo, as well as its strategic position, which facilitates logistics to the destination mining operation.
"After its disembarkation, the DR411i will continue its transfer to a mining operation in Chile, where it will be incorporated into production drilling tasks. Its arrival is part of the incorporation of Sandvik technology aimed at strengthening the productivity, precision, and safety of mining operations," TPC reported.
For her part, Laura Chiuminatto, General Manager of TPC, stated that "for Terminal Puerto Coquimbo, it is very important to be part of operations like this, which reflect our terminal's capacity to receive and mobilize specialized cargo linked to strategic sectors such as mining. The arrival of this drill rig, aboard the BBC Rhine, demonstrates TPC's versatility and the coordinated work behind each operation."
Meanwhile, the Regional Ministerial Secretary of Mining for Coquimbo, Juan Carlos Salinas Maraboli, indicated that "the incorporation of this type of state-of-the-art equipment reflects the dynamism and logistical capacity of our region to meet the requirements of large-scale mining."
"This is a high-standard technology that provides greater productivity, precision, and safety to mining operations, also incorporating automation and connectivity tools that strengthen the competitiveness of an increasingly modern and efficient industry. The arrival of this equipment through the Port of Coquimbo reaffirms the strategic role played by our regional infrastructure in the development of the mining sector and in the productive chain associated with this activity," he added.
With this operation, TPC adds a new precedent to its history of project cargo handling, in line with its role as a multipurpose terminal in the Coquimbo Region.
