ABS, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) have completed a joint development project for a high-efficiency, ultra-large container ship with a capacity of 16,000 TEU and a hybrid battery system.
ABS granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to KSOE and HD HHI for the electrical analysis and electrical design of the proposed vessel. ABS completed the design reviews according to class requirements.
"This AIP marks another significant milestone in our collaboration with KSOE and HD HHI to advance hybrid electric systems in large commercial vessels. With safety as a guiding principle, ABS is committed to providing the technical rigor and industry-leading guidance necessary to address the implementation challenges presented by these technologies. We are proud to strengthen this collaboration as we work towards a safer and more efficient maritime industry," stated Joshua Divin, ABS Senior Vice President of Marine Business Development.
"This achievement underscores our continuous progress towards the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2050 carbon neutrality goal. We remain committed to strengthening the trust of shipping companies and global classification societies through constant advancements in eco-friendly and high-efficiency naval technologies, including integrated battery solutions across the group," explained Byung-Hun Kwon, Executive Vice President and Head of HD KSOE's Electrification Center.
In 2025, KSOE and HD HHI received an AIP from ABS for the first phase of the project, focused on electric propulsion systems.
