At Damen Dredging Shipyard in the Netherlands, representatives from Metalkol completed the technical inspection of their recently acquired Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) 500. After inspections and tests, the custom-built CSD received approval for delivery.
Following this, it will be transported to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it will be used in a mining operation.
Prior to its reception, the standard CSD500 dredger was configured to meet specific project requirements through a range of proven Damen options. These include anchor booms for handling swing anchors, a support pontoon to increase the dredger's swing width, an extended dredging depth capacity of -16 meters, a vacuum relief valve, a discharge valve, and a dredging instrumentation package.
"Our client required a state-of-the-art dredger, suitable for a remote location and with high levels of operational availability. We held several fruitful discussions as we worked to find a suitable solution that incorporated the operational team's requirements. We are pleased that, thanks to our inventory development program, we were able to fully customize the CSD within a few weeks of the order being placed," stated Frederick Vandepitte, Damen Regional Director.
Following its acceptance, the CSD500 is being prepared for transport to Africa. Following Damen's modular dredger concept, the vessel will be disassembled into modules, optimized for efficient road and waterway transport, as well as for assembly at the mine.
