Ferry Holdings has published its Statement of Performance Expectations (SPE) for 2026/27, detailing the objectives to be achieved over the next year as the Cook Strait Ferry Replacement Program progresses.
The connection across the Cook Strait is a vital link for New Zealand, connecting people, goods, and businesses between the North and South Islands. The Government is committed to providing safe, reliable, resilient, and economically efficient ferry services, with two new vessels expected to enter service in 2029.
The SPE provides transparency on the work being done to achieve this goal and allows the public, stakeholders, and Parliament to see the progress. Next year, the company will focus on transitioning from planning and procurement to execution.
Key priorities include finalizing the detailed design of the new ferries and preparing the groundwork for the start of construction in 2027; continuing with maritime simulations and technical assurance work to support the safe entry into service of the new vessels; continuing to carry out significant infrastructure works in Wellington and Picton to ensure both ports are ready when the new ships arrive; and coordinating the program's execution among partners, including KiwiRail, CentrePort, and Port Marlborough.
Work is already underway, with initial construction activities progressing and major infrastructure works scheduled to continue until 2026 and beyond.
