The Indonesia-flagged Ro-Ro/passenger ship Mutiara Sentosa 2 caught fire in the Java Sea east of Madura Island approximately 19 nautical miles north of Burung Island, Indonesia on 2 August. The incident caused the death of 5 and 37 remain missing.

The Mutiara Sentosa 2 departed from Tanjung Perak, Surabaya, headed for Makassar, Sulawesi, with a total of 271 crew and passengers on board. Several hours into the journey. The captain reported the incident at 06:00 WIB to the shipping company. SAR received first report 08:24 WIB, from the Tanjung Perak Harbour Master. There was no further contact from the vessel after that point.
The alert indicated that the fire had engulfed a large section of the vessel and that the people aboard had retreated to the deck to avoid the flames and thick smoke. Several people are said to have jumped into the water to escape the flames as the fire spread.
The vessels and assets involved in the rescue operation included TB Hasnur 26, British Mentor, Meratus Project 3, KN SAR 249 Permadi, KN Grantin P.211, KN Masalembo, KRI Nala-363, KRI Bung Hatta-370, KP Manyar 5003, and an East Java Regional Police maritime helicopter. The cargo ship Meratus Project 3 was nearby the vessel but could only provide limited assistance due to having flammable cargo on board.
Based on the official manifest and latest recovery figures 234 people evacuated, 229 survivors 37 missing and 5 deaths. Search and rescue operations by Indonesian authorities and good Samaritan vessels are still ongoing.
