The Japanese-flagged vehicle carrier Niraikanai II ran aground off Toshima Island, Tokyo, in the early hours of 19 June, prompting a response from the Coast Guard.
According to local news media, the vessel grounded on a rocky shoreline at around 3:30 am local time while en route from Osaka to Tokyo. The ship was carrying a cargo of vehicles and trailers, with 17 crew members on board.
No injuries, flooding, or oil pollution have been reported. However, the vessel remains unable to navigate under its own power due to the grounding. A Japan Coast Guard patrol boat has headed to the scene to investigate further.
Niraikanai is a 2017-built vehicle carrier owned by Ryukyu Kaiun, a shipping company based in Okinawa Prefecture. The vessel measures 180.5 meters in length, 26 meters in width and has a gross tonnage of over 11,000 tons.
