The National Port Authority (APN), an entity attached to the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), highlights the launch of Latin America's first Shore Power system at the South Container Terminal of Callao Port, operated by DP World Callao, as a significant advancement in the modernization, innovation, and sustainability of the National Port System.
This initiative will allow compatible vessels to connect to the onshore electricity supply during their stay at the terminal, enabling them to turn off their auxiliary generators and, consequently, reduce fossil fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and noise associated with port operations.
The commissioning of this infrastructure took place during an official event held at the South Container Terminal, with the participation of the President of the Republic, Keiko Fujimori, the Minister of Transport and Communications Rafael Rey, representatives of the APN, national authorities, and representatives of the port sector. This milestone positions Callao Port at the forefront of port innovation in the region and demonstrates the country's progress towards an increasingly sustainable maritime-port activity.
According to DP World Callao, the implementation of the Shore Power (Onshore Power Supply – OPS) system will reduce over 6,300 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, a technology present in only about 3% of the world's ports, combining innovation, competitiveness, and sustainability, positioning the terminal as a benchmark in Latin America.
For the APN, the incorporation of these types of technologies is in line with the strategic objectives of the National Port Development Plan (PNDP), which signifies an important advance in the development of the National Port System.
The National Port Authority reaffirms its commitment to promoting investments and initiatives that drive innovation, operational efficiency, and sustainability, contributing to the strengthening of ports that consolidate Peru as a logistical and port reference in the region.
