By laboratory diagnosis, the National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (SENASA) registered a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 on a backyard poultry farm in Carlos Spegazzini, province of Buenos Aires.
The case was detected after receiving notification of mortality on a property in the aforementioned town (Latitude: -34.92122; Longitude: -58.61182), which was attended by SENASA personnel in the jurisdiction to address the suspicion and take corresponding samples.
To prevent the spread of the virus, a 3 km prevention area was delimited around the outbreak, where biocontainment measures and epidemiological tracing will be carried out, with the aim of determining eventual epidemiological links.
It should be noted that the finding does not affect Argentina's sanitary status as a country free of HPAI and that the disease is not transmitted by the consumption of poultry products, such as meat and eggs.
Given this sanitary situation, all poultry producers are recommended to reinforce management, hygiene, and biosecurity measures on the farm. Among the main actions, periodic control of the entry of people and vehicles should be carried out, cleaning and disinfection of facilities, equipment, and supplies should be increased, and contact of wild birds with production units should be avoided.
Similarly, backyard bird owners are reminded to keep facilities, feeders, and drinkers in adequate hygienic conditions, prevent wild birds from accessing the property, and use exclusive clothing for tasks related to breeding.
If neurological, nervous, and digestive signs are observed in birds or high mortality is recorded, it is essential to immediately notify SENASA.
