Port of Santos projects to reach 100 million TEU in 2026

The Port of Santos projects that it will reach the historic milestone of handling 100 million TEU this year since it began handling containers in the 1970s.

In 1981, Tecon Santos was inaugurated, consolidating the port's leadership in the transfer of containerized units in Brazil. Until the early 2000s, the volume of cargo handled reached up to 1 million TEU per year.

Thanks to the modernization of port facilities, increased efficiency, and the expansion of new container terminals such as BTP, Ecoporto, and DP World Santos, the port exceeded the 5.9 million TEU mark in 2025, representing an increase of 7.7% compared to the previous year.

The port facility anticipates that these figures will increase even further with the creation of Tecon 10, a terminal that will boost the Port of Santos' container handling capacity by approximately 50%. The auction to determine who will implement and manage the terminal is expected to take place soon.

According to the President of the Santos Port Authority (APS), Anderson Pomini, this new milestone in container handling reflects the operational efficiency of the complex. "The Port of Santos demonstrates its capacity to meet the growing demand of national logistics, while also preparing for the coming decades with the creation of Tecon 10," stated Pomini.

In terms of tonnage, the Port of Santos has also broken records. For example, cargo handling reached 186.4 million tons in 2025. This represents an increase of 3.6% compared to the previous record, set in 2024 (179.8 million tons).
