Ecuador exported 12.14 million boxes of bananas to China between January and August 2026, an 11.84% increase compared to the same period in 2025. China consolidated its position as the main Asian destination for Ecuadorian fruit, representing 4.30% of global banana exports.
This growth in shipments is due, among other factors, to lower banana production in several Asian countries due to climatic and phytosanitary conditions. Additionally, the trade agreement between Ecuador and China allowed for a progressive reduction in the tariff applied to Ecuadorian bananas, which stood at 7% during 2026.
The 27-day maritime connection between Guayaquil, Chancay, and Shanghai also favors the access of Ecuadorian fruit to the Chinese market. The route, incorporated in 2025 and operated by COSCO Shipping Lines together with Contecon, strengthens logistical conditions for exports to Asia.
