El Arbeyal beach hosted this morning the second edition of 'Oeste en Juego', an event dedicated to grassroots sports that brought together the seven clubs that make up the Gijón Oeste Sports Foundation (FUNDEGO) and allowed citizens to learn about and participate in the different sports disciplines developed by these entities.
Between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, exhibitions and participatory activities in rugby, basketball, handball, judo, roller hockey, rhythmic gymnastics, and volleyball took place, in an event open to all audiences.
The participating clubs—Calzada Rugby Club, Club Baloncesto L'Arbeyal, Club Balonmano La Calzada, Club Deportivo Judo La Calzada, Club Patín Solimar-Telecable Hockey, Club Rítmica Galaica, and Club Voleibol La Calzada—gather more than 1,000 athletes and carry out important sports and social work in the western neighborhoods of Gijón.
The president of the Port Authority, Nieves Roqueñí, expressed her satisfaction "to see that a project like this is consolidated in a second edition in which," she highlighted, "I believe the success has been even greater than in last year's call," taking into account the large number of athletes, companions, and public that filled El Arbeyal beach from early morning.
Roqueñí also highlighted "the enthusiasm with which the Port Authority welcomed this project last year" and was very proud that the origin of FUNDEGO was "around a table of the Port Authority."
To the seven clubs that make up the Foundation, the president especially thanked them that "in a moment of polarization like the one we are experiencing, they have been able to put the common interest of citizens and athletes above individual issues," while reiterating the support and collaboration of the APG to continue developing a project of which, above all, children and young people are a part.
The event, sponsored by the Gijón Port Authority and organized together with FUNDEGO, was also attended by the General Director of Physical Activity and Sports of the Principality, Manuela Fernández; the director of the Port of Gijón, José Luis Barettino; and the president of Club Natación Santa Olaya, Gonzalo González; and also had the collaboration of the Gijón City Council and Caja Rural de Asturias.
In addition to the sports activities, people who completed the tour through the seven enabled spaces received a commemorative t-shirt and were able to participate in different raffles for sports equipment and other recreational activities developed throughout the morning.
'Oeste en Juego' is part of the commitment of the Gijón Port Authority to the area closest to El Musel and to the sports and associative fabric of the western neighborhoods, strengthening the relationship between the port and the citizenry.
