Port of Barcelona Installs 80MVA Transformer for Electrical Substation

The Port of Barcelona received the main 80MVA transformer for its new electrical substation, part of the Nexigen Docks Electrification Plan. The infrastructure will power the dock electrification plan and support Onshore Power Supply (OPS) technology, allowing berthed vessels to disconnect their auxiliary engines. According to projections, the substation will be operational in the first half of 2027.

The Port of Barcelona ( Spain) received the main 80MVA transformer for its new electrical substation. The infrastructure is part of the development of the Nexigen Docks Electrification Plan. It has been reported that the aforementioned substation is part of the main axis of the network that will power the development of the Nexigen plan. Additionally, it will support the use of Onshore Power Supply ( OPS) technology, a tool that allows berthed vessels to connect to the electrical grid so they can turn off their auxiliary combustion engines. According to the Catalan port's projections, the substation will be operational during the first half of 2027. Meanwhile, initiatives linked to Nexigen continue to be promoted, such as the undergrounding of the high-voltage network that connects the Cerdà Substation of Red Eléctrica. Finally, it was detailed that "the medium-voltage network is being deployed to carry energy to the Adossat dock, including underwater drilling between the Energía and Adossat docks, for the supply to the OPS system for cruise ships under construction at Terminal H".
