2026-09-15. PortCastelló welcomed the Maria Sibum, a cargo ship equipped with an advanced wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) using two rigid suction sails. This innovative technological solution highlights the Castellón Port Authority's commitment to environmental sustainability in the maritime sector, by allowing an estimated 10% reduction in fuel consumption and polluting emissions into the atmosphere.
The vessel, consigned by Noatum Maritime Spain S.A. and belonging to the shipping company Frisian Shipbroker GmbH, docked at the Centenario quay, where the Noatum Terminal Castellón S.A. successfully carried out the operation of loading a wind turbine blade. With a length of 89 meters and a beam of 12 meters, this Portuguese-flagged ship stands out as a practical example of how the application of clean energy contributes to compliance with European FuelEU Maritime regulations and to the reduction of costs derived from the emissions trading system (EU ETS).
The technology incorporated in the Maria Sibum consists of compact, autonomous, and retractable wings capable of generating additional thrust by harnessing wind power highly efficiently, adapting quickly to navigation conditions.
The president of the Castellón Port Authority, Rubén Ibáñez, stated that "the call of vessels like the Maria Sibum demonstrates PortCastelló's commitment to energy transition and sustainability in maritime transport. We want our port to be a modern, competitive, and efficient logistics platform, prepared to respond to the environmental demands of the present and the future."
With this operation, PortCastelló reaffirms its role as a logistics hub committed to innovation, operational efficiency, and decarbonization, aligning its strategy with global sustainability objectives and the protection of the marine environment.
