The president of the Port Authority of Almería makes an institutional visit and meets with her counterpart in Algeciras
The presidents of the port authorities of Almería and the Bay of Algeciras review the progress of OPE 2026
Less than a week before the conclusion of Operation Strait Crossing (OPE) 2026, and with the Port of Almería being the second in the national system, after Algeciras, in what is the largest seasonal movement of travelers in Europe and one of the largest in the world, the president of the Port Authority of Almería (APA), Rosario Soto, made an institutional visit to the port of Algeciras, where she held a meeting with the president of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA), Gerardo Landaluce. During the meeting, they delved into the development of the OPE and the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) – European Entry and Exit System – which will become fully operational in the Port of Almería in the coming months.

Furthermore, with the Port of Algeciras serving as an example within the framework of this operation, Rosario Soto, along with the Head of the Exploitation and Business Development Department, Borja Fernández-Pacheco, and the Head of the Port Police, José Miguel López, learned about the passenger services linked to this port with the aim of expanding those provided in Almería. It should be noted that Algeciras is the leading port for passengers in the OPE and connects with Tangier Med and Ceuta; and Tarifa, a port also managed by the APBA, connects with Tangier Ville. For its part, the Port of Almería connects through regular lines with Melilla, Nador in Morocco, and Oran and Ghazaouet in Algeria.
Within the framework of the institutional visit, the president of the APBA and the general director, José Luis Hormaechea, presented the major projects of the Port of Algeciras to Soto and showed the port facilities, as well as the two container terminals, whose management makes this port the most efficient in the European Union, according to the report prepared by the World Bank and S&P Global. The president of the APA expressed gratitude for the attention provided by the entire team of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras during the visit and highly valued their collaboration.
Entry and Exit Registration System
The EES is an automated IT system that allows the registration of entry and exit data of third-country nationals each time they cross the external borders of member states. The EES system centrally collects biometric data (fingerprints and facial images) and personal data (name, passport, date and place of entry/exit from the EU); in addition, it has the ability to generate alerts to Member States in case of unauthorized instances and allows replacing the physical stamping of passports with a digital stamp.
The implementation of this system in the Port of Almería, as well as in the Port of Algeciras, is financed by the European Union within the framework of the Financial Support Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy (IGFV) Program for the 2021-2027 Framework.
