Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The Port Authority of the Bay of Cádiz (APBC) considers that the declaration of the Trafalgar Lighthouse as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), approved today by the Council of Ministers, represents a recognition of its undeniable historical, architectural, and maritime value, and expresses its utmost respect for this decision, which has not yet been officially communicated to it.
The APBC recalls that it has been processing an administrative concession for the enhancement of this space, within the framework of the "Lighthouses of Spain" project, promoted by the then Ministry of Public Works, and in line with the Strategic Framework of Puertos del Estado, which includes among its objectives bringing aids to navigation closer to citizens through complementary uses compatible with their function.
The Port Authority points out that the announcement of the initiation of the BIC file occurred when the concession procedure was in a very advanced stage, introducing new circumstances that must be analyzed.
In this regard, the APBC, upon learning of the initiation of the file, already requested the Ministry of Culture to clarify the implications that the BIC declaration could have on the administrative concession in process, without having received a response to date. Given the definitive declaration, the Port Authority will formally reiterate this request with the aim of having the necessary legal certainty to continue with the procedure.
Likewise, the APBC recalls that it has a restoration intervention planned for the Trafalgar Lighthouse within the framework of the 2% Cultural program, as a demonstration of its commitment to the conservation and recovery of this maritime heritage.
The APBC argues that heritage protection and its enhancement for the enjoyment of citizens are not incompatible objectives, and trusts that solutions can be found to reconcile both purposes, always respecting legality, the heritage values of the lighthouse, and its essential function for maritime safety.
