The Port of València now hosts the two 500kW PV-bos platforms that make up the 1MW floating marine solar energy demonstrator developed by BlueNewables. With the installation of the second unit, BlueNewables, with the support of Naturgy, has completed the deployment of the demonstrator, which is now beginning its testing phase to validate the behavior of this technology in real operating conditions.
The two PV-bos platforms, built in the San Enrique shipyard in Vigo, are named 'Paiporta' and 'Catarroja' in homage to two of the Valencian municipalities most affected by the DANA of 2024. The first unit was named 'Paiporta', and the second 'Catarroja'.
The project is now entering its testing and monitoring phase in the waters of the Port of València. The objective is to gain knowledge about the operation of this technology in a real marine environment and to analyze aspects related to its performance, operation, maintenance, and integration into port areas. This phase is part of the demonstrator's validation process, so results and learnings will be obtained as its operation progresses.
PV-bos expands the field of application of solar energy where land availability is limited or very costly, electrical grids are insufficient, or in island systems. The solution developed by BlueNewables is designed to be modular, scalable, and industrializable, facilitating its adaptation to different locations and project models. This approach allows for bringing generation closer to consumption points and utilizing new surfaces to produce clean energy without competing for land.
Innovation as a driver of energy transformation
The installation of the demonstrator and the start of its testing phase in the waters of the Port of València is part of Valenciaport's strategy to move towards a more sustainable, innovative, and efficient port model. In this context, the Autoridad Portuaria de València is developing a testing platform for the connection, testing, and grid injection of marine renewable energy technological demonstrators, which will remain available for future projects.
During the XVI ENERMAR Technical Conferences, held in València, participants had the opportunity to learn firsthand about the project through a visit to the marine solar platforms. This visit is integrated into the program of these conferences, organized by the Renewable Energy Working Group of the Spanish Association of Naval and Oceanic Engineers, dedicated to the analysis of marine renewable energies.
Furthermore, Naturgy and BlueNewables will collaborate for two years in the exchange of technical, operational, strategic, and economic information derived from the project's development, both during the testing phase and in subsequent monitoring. This collaboration includes the analysis of performance data, technical incidents, costs, operation, and lessons learned to evaluate the potential of this technology.
The installation is part of RENMARINAS VALENCIAPORT, an initiative funded by the IDAE with European Union-NextGeneration EU funds, conceived as a demonstration environment for marine renewable technologies. Within this framework, the Autoridad Portuaria de València has developed the testing area and associated infrastructure, while BlueNewables participates with its 1 MW floating photovoltaic demonstrator, composed of two 500kW PV-bos platforms each.
Floating marine photovoltaics open new opportunities to expand the use of renewable resources in the maritime environment. Its potential complementarity with other technologies, especially offshore wind, as well as its applications in ports, islands, and other coastal infrastructures, make it one of the most promising emerging solutions for advancing the decarbonization of the energy system.
