Carnival Corp.'s $25,000 pledge to humanitarian organization Direct Relief on behalf of Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises will assist recovery efforts across Hawaii following a series of devastating hurricanes.
The donation will assist immediate relief needs being managed by Direct Relief in the wake of Hurricane Nolo. Funds will also support long-term recovery efforts in Hawaii following Hurricanes Lala and Lowell, and several other powerful storms that have recently impacted the islands.
Carnival Corp. cruise lines call more than 200 times annually at five Hawaiian destinations, including Nawiliwili, Kahului, Honolulu, Hilo and Kailua Kona. Each year, Hawaii welcomes approximately 528,000 passengers from the Carnival group's ships.
Direct Relief is working with local health care providers, nonprofits and health agencies to determine ongoing recovery needs. Through its Hurricane Preparedness Program, the organization has pre-positioned three emergency stockpiles of medical aid in Hawaii, giving health care teams immediate access to medications and supplies commonly needed in the days following a storm.
Direct Relief has also provided field medic packs to support triage care, water purification supplies and personal care items for displaced individuals and families.
Since the Kona low storm system hit Hawaii on March 10, followed by Hurricanes Lala and Lowell, Direct Relief has provided more than $800,000 in medical aid to health centers, clinics and nonprofit organizations across the islands.
