Growing up in Bremerhaven, a city rich in maritime tradition, Julia Siebert naturally gravitated toward the cruise industry, beginning her career with Transocean Tours.
I was born and raised in Bremerhaven in Germany, a city with a long maritime tradition where ocean liners and cruise ships have always been part of the skyline. Whether alongside the pier or in one of the dry docks, ships were simply part of everyday life. Like many locals, "ship spotting" was a favorite weekend activity, so I honestly cannot remember a single first cruise ship. They have been part of my world for as long as I can remember.
My cruise career began with Transocean Tours. As a young professional, I first joined through an internship and later worked on board in guest relations and shore excursions. My first shoreside position was as assistant to the CEO, supporting project management activities across the business. During those years, I also discovered a ship that remains especially close to my heart: Astor, [scrapped in 2021] a vessel that became the setting for countless memorable experiences and lasting friendships.
Perhaps somewhat surprisingly for someone working in cruise, while I enjoy spending time on board with our guests and crew, in my private time I love the contrast of camping and surfing holidays. That said, one of my fondest cruising memories is a Christmas market river cruise I took with my mother – an experience that remains very special to me.
My first mentor in the cruise industry was Peter Waehnert, then CEO of Transocean Tours. What impressed me most was his ability to combine absolute professionalism and strong leadership with genuine approachability. He was always engaged, accessible and deeply involved in the business – qualities that have continued to influence my own leadership style throughout my career.
My first Seatrade Cruise event was in Hamburg around 2015, followed by many visits to Seatrade Cruise Med and Seatrade Cruise Global. What keeps bringing me back is the atmosphere and the opportunity to connect with people from every corner of the cruise industry.
My favourite memory is returning to Miami for the first Seatrade Cruise Global after the pandemic. Reuniting with colleagues, partners and friends from around the world again was a powerful reminder that our industry is built as much on people and personal connections as it is on ships and destinations.
