Controls on Tierra del Fuego Ferry Double in 2026

The Tierra del Fuego Port Authority has increased its preventive controls and inspections during 2026. The operations have focused on the area's connectivity ferry.

According to the Maritime Governorate of Punta Arenas, "throughout 2025, 216 identity checks were carried out, while so far in 2026, 461 have already been recorded, which is more than double those carried out the previous year. In addition, 121 vessel inspections and nine people detained in 2026. Among the procedures carried out this year, there is also a seizure of narcotic substances, a case of smuggling, and a seizure for an infraction of the General Law on Fisheries and Aquaculture."

Furthermore, details were provided on the operations carried out on the connectivity ferry, stating that "due to its relevance for the movement of inhabitants, passengers, vehicles, and goods, maritime connectivity constitutes a strategic point for developing preventive actions and inspections that allow for the timely detection of possible infractions or illicit acts."

"The objective, however, goes beyond reacting to the commission of a crime. The strategy primarily aims at prevention through a visible and permanent presence, which reinforces the feeling of security and reduces opportunities for illicit acts to occur," it was added.

On the other hand, the importance of joint work with other institutions such as the Investigative Police, Carabineros de Chile, and the National Customs Service was highlighted.

"This coordination allows each agency to contribute its specialized attributes and capabilities, generating more comprehensive controls and a joint response to situations that may affect community safety or involve infractions of current legislation," it was indicated.

In this regard, the Captain of the Port of Tierra del Fuego, First Lieutenant Francisco Morales Muñoz, stated that "our main objective is prevention. The presence of the Maritime Police at connectivity points, coupled with coordinated work with other state institutions, allows us to anticipate situations that may affect the safety of our community. Tierra del Fuego has particular geographical characteristics, and that makes it essential to work in a coordinated, permanent, and on-site manner," concluded the maritime authority.
