The Puntland Navy and Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) reported on 25 September the release of oil tanker Sibu 1 after being hijacked by Somali pirates. All 20 crewmembers are reported safe.

PMPF launched a counter-piracy operation that was carried out by forces two days ago and freed the oil tanker Sibu 1. In the operation, PMPF successfully captured 47 pirates, with one individual reportedly killed during the operation, five were injured, and the remaining 41 are in custody.
The crew comprises 16 Indians, two Syrians, one Iraqi and one Sudanese national. PMPF also confirmed that the vessel and its cargo remained safe.
The release comes after Sibu 1, formerly known as the Seamul, carrying oil products, was hijacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden, around 136 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen, on 20 August. According to UKMTO reports, the tanker transmitted a distress signal and reported an unauthorized vessel approaching.
It was later confirmed via military sources that six armed intruders had taken control of the vessel and had diverted the vessel toward Somalia.
Sibu 1 is a 2001-built oil products tanker sailing under the flag of Eritrea. The vessel was sanctioned by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in December 2025 over the alleged transport of Iranian petroleum products, including naphtha and gasoil.
