The Yemeni Coast Guard detained the tanker Nereida for discharging an unauthorized shipment at Ras Isa Port in Hodeidah province.

According to Yemen news media outlets, the 175-mete-long-tanker had discharged cargo at the Houthi-controlled port without prior approval from Yemeni government authorities and without following the UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism for Yemen (UNVIM) which is an inspection mechanism for cargo headed to non-government-controlled ports in Yemen in order to prevent arms smuggling.
The tanker reportedly switched off its Automatic Identification System (AIS) for parts of the voyage; its signal reappeared near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait after it had departed Ras Isa Port.
A Coast Guard vessel intercepted the Nereida which initially refused to comply, with armed guards opening fire on the Coast Guard vessel.
The vessel later complied and was diverted and escorted to Aden. An investigation has been opened into the voyage, the cargo, the vessel's documentation, its port calls, and the shooting.
