A Turkish crew member who survived a drone attack on his cargo ship died three days later when the vessel that rescued him suffered a similar impact near the Russian port of Novorossiysk, in the Black Sea, according to family members and local press.
Ilker Lazoglu, 47, was the chief cook of the merchant vessel Necibe, flagged in San Marino. The ship was attacked on August 18 while loading wheat off the coast of Tuapse.
All 18 crew members abandoned the vessel and were rescued by the Turkish-owned, Cameroon-flagged ro-ro ship Ural, as reported by Türkiye Today.
On August 21, the Ural was also attacked near Novorossiysk. Lazoglu was seriously wounded and later died. Eight other crew members suffered injuries, Turkish media reported.
Following the fatal second attack recorded in Black Sea waters, the Ural docked on August 22 at the Turkish port of Samsun, carrying the lifeless body of Ilker Lazoglu and the convalescing sailors.
Upon the ship's arrival, the chief cook's remains were formally handed over to his family, while the eight injured seamen were urgently transferred to various medical assistance centers.
According to maritime sector reports, the merchant vessel Necibe was attacked on August 18 while loading 20,000 tons of wheat in the vicinity of the Russian port of Tuapse.
After the impact, the 18 crew members of the Necibe were successfully evacuated by the Ural, a roll-on/roll-off cargo ship belonging to a Turkish shipowner and sailing under the flag of convenience of Cameroon.
