The vessel was bound from Mönsterås, Sweden, to Sillamäe, Estonia. It was using the established Russia–Estonia–Finland maritime corridor when it was detained by Russian authorities. According to the Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR), the vessel made a sharp turn, changed course, and headed deeper into Russian waters.
ERR reports that Russian authorities have provided no explanation for the detention. The Estonian Transport Administration noted that every country has the right to detain a vessel in its territorial waters for inspections.
Estonian authorities have advised vessels using the corridor to avoid Russian waters, although the route remains preferable because it avoids the shallower waters closer to the Estonian coast.
Vasterbotten is a general cargo built in 2008. The vessel measures 119.26 meters in length and 16.54 meters in width. The vessel is currently moored at Sillamae.
