Bencros Marine Fenders, a Slovak manufacturer of rubber fenders for ports, tugboats, and work vessels, announced that the CO2 savings integrated into its fenders are now independently verified and can be transferred to its customers as certified emission reductions.
The first certificates will be available starting September 2, 2026, in the Proba carbon standards registry.
Bencros manufactures fenders using high-quality rubber compounds sourced from tire factories and industrial rubber production, mixed with rubber powder from shredded used tires; that is, high-quality rubber that would otherwise be incinerated or discarded. In 2024 and 2025, the company reused 5,070 tons of rubber waste in this manner.
The resulting reduction of 13,112 tons of CO2e emissions has been verified according to the Proba methodology, with Bureau Veritas acting as the independent verification body.
For buyers, the product itself has not changed; it has the same specifications and performance. However, each ton of Bencros fenders now represents a certified saving of approximately 2.6 tons of CO2e compared to one made with virgin rubber.
Of this amount, 2.42 tons per ton can be directly accounted for in the buyer's greenhouse gas inventory (Scope 3, Category 1: Purchased goods and services); the remaining 0.16 tons, resulting from the avoided incineration of rubber waste, are reported separately as a climate contribution.
Each certificate is registered in the buyer's name in the Proba registry, is traceable to the underlying rubber, and can be claimed only once.
"This is not an offset. An offset is like planting a tree to compensate for emissions from a flight. This saving occurs within the product, in its own supply chain, and is directly deducted from your declared carbon footprint. Whoever buys the fender they were going to buy anyway, also buys the CO2 saving with it. The saving only exists because someone bought the product, and it is not for sale on any market."
The certificates are priced at USD 87 per ton of CO2e saved. The funds raised finance the waste processing itself: collection, recycling, homogenization, and quality control that make recycled rubber suitable for fender production, as well as the independent verification of each certificate.
The first certificates have already been reserved by a Norwegian client, who acquired fenders along with the associated CO2 savings. Bencros anticipates that the project will save nearly 5,000 tons of CO2 in 2026 alone.
This certification is not a change of course, but rather another step in the trajectory Bencros has been following for many years: the company has long been actively working on sustainability solutions for the rubber fender industry, from basing its production on recovered rubber raw material to implementing a collection system for its products.
Fenders at the end of their useful life can be returned, shredded, and reincorporated into the production of new ones, further closing the loop. Starting in 2026, Bencros will also supply reprocessed unvulcanized rubber compound to third-party rubber product manufacturers.
