San Antonio Terminal Internacional (STI) handled the inaugural call of a new Maersk container ship. The Panamanian-flagged unit is equipped with a dual-fuel engine capable of running on methanol (MDF).
The milestone was achieved with the arrival of the Maersk Tokyo at Berth No. 2, operated by the concessionaire of the Port of San Antonio. The vessel, agented by Ian Taylor, will handle 2,700 containers, with 1,500 for embarkation and 1,200 for discharge.
The ship, with a capacity of 8,906 TEU, arrived from APM Terminals Callao after becoming the first methanol-enabled container ship to call at Peru. This is part of the AC3 service, a route that links the Asian continent with the West Coast of South America (WCSA).
Peru's achievement was preceded in Chile in June 2026, specifically at DP World San Antonio, following the arrival of the CMA CGM Osmium, which measures 335 meters in length, 51 meters in beam, 147,200 deadweight tons, and has a capacity of 13,136 TEU.
The Maersk Tokyo, launched in July 2026 from the facilities of the Japan Marine United Co (JMU shipyard), will remain in the San Antonio port facility until the morning of Wednesday, August 19. It is expected to return to the country at the end of October.
The container ship belongs to the Japanese non-operating owner (NOO) Nissen Kaiun and constitutes the first delivery of an order for 12 units. All commissioned vessels will operate under long-term charter contracts with Maersk.
