Without mentioning a possible repeal of decree 457/2021, the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, concluded his visit to Chile. The aforementioned document suggests "joint control" of the Strait of Magellan.
However, after holding a bilateral meeting at La Moneda Palace with the President of Chile, José Antonio Kast, both governments issued a joint statement asserting that the sovereignty of the bioceanic route is subject to the international treaties of 1881 and 1984 -signed by both nations- which recognize full Chilean control.
"Both Presidents agreed that the legal regime of the Strait of Magellan is that established by the Boundary Treaty of 1881 and by the Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1984, instruments that are fully in force and are definitive for both States, and which establish the sovereignty of the Republic of Chile over the entire strait."
During the bilateral meeting - which did not last more than 50 minutes - topics of strategic cooperation, international trade, the fight against organized crime, and security were addressed. In addition, the government of Chile supported Argentina's sovereignty rights over the Malvinas Islands (Falkland), South Georgia, South Sandwich, and surrounding maritime areas; considering them "legitimate."
All of the above was included in the joint statement.
It should be noted that this meeting was not part of an official or state visit, as the reason for Javier Milei's trip to Chile was due to the development of the Madrid Forum, an event that brings together different leaders from the region linked to right-wing ideologies and which had Santiago as its last venue.
