The Port of Arica completed its first mineral shipment using Rotainer-type tippable containers, which were transported from the Impala Terminals warehouse, located in the Port Activity Extension Zone (ZEAP), to the port terminal.
This new system allows for the transfer and handling of minerals in hermetic and controlled units during the different stages of the operation, significantly reducing cargo handling and preventing its exposure to the environment, according to Empresa Portuaria Arica.
The operation allowed the concessionaire Terminal Puerto Arica (TPA) to move 10,000 tons of mineral through Site 2B, implementing a new logistical scheme that incorporates the use of hermetic Rotainer containers for the transfer and handling of minerals.
In this regard, the general manager of Empresa Portuaria Arica, Jorge Cáceres, stated that more than a new shipment, this operation represented a change in the way minerals are managed, moving towards processes that combine operational efficiency, innovation, and greater environmental care.
The executive explained that the system allows the cargo to be contained during the different stages of the logistical process, reducing direct handling of the mineral and contributing to more controlled management. In this way, the transfer between the storage facility and the embarkation area is integrated into a more organized, safe, and efficient operational chain.
"This first shipment represents much more than a new mineral transfer operation. It is a concrete example of how the Port of Arica and, especially our concessionaire TPA, is moving towards a new operational model, incorporating innovation, technology, and solutions that make the logistical chain more efficient and, at the same time, strengthen our commitment to environmental care. The use of Rotainer constitutes a significant change in the way this type of cargo is handled and opens new opportunities to continue modernizing our operations," said Cáceres.
Operation
The first shipment from the ZEAP allowed for the integrated coordination of the different stages of the operation, from loading, transport, stacking, and embarkation, generating experience and knowledge to continue perfecting the model.
As this was the first operation planned and sequenced under this scheme, the yields obtained remained within the expected ranges. The experience will allow for progressive advancement in the optimization of times and processes, as teams and operators incorporate greater specialization and learning.
"The transformation of the port is not just about moving more cargo, but about doing it better. We want to move towards more efficient, safe, and sustainable operations, incorporating technologies that allow for reduced handling of minerals and greater control throughout the process. That is the standard we are promoting for the Port of Arica," added the General Manager of Empresa Portuaria Arica.
