China's state railways handled 2.35 billion tons of cargo in the seven months of 2026, 0.7 percent more than the previous year, providing support to reduce logistics costs and ensure stable economic operations, the railway operator said on Wednesday.
According to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., the average daily freight volume stood at 187,000 wagons, an increase of 2.1 percent compared to the same period last year.
The railway sector prioritized the transportation of essential goods for the national economy and people's livelihoods, ensuring fast and efficient delivery. During the January-July period, 1.22 billion tons of coal were transported, including 813 million tons of thermal coal.
The operator designed tailored logistics solutions for major grain, chemical, and textile companies. As a result, grain transport rose by 7.4%, chemical products by 5.4%, and textiles by 21.4% year-on-year.
Meanwhile, the railway sector deepened reform and innovation to develop multimodal transport. A total of 165 rail-water intermodal products with a "single document" were launched, with bookings reaching 71,600 TEUs, boosting the volume of container rail-water transport by 9.2 percent. The volume of rail-road intermodal transport increased by 80.9 percent to 294 million tons, thanks to the development of high-priority rail-road routes.
In collaboration with the All-China Federation of Supply and Marketing Cooperatives, the group innovated a consolidated cotton transport model and operated 96 special trains for Xinjiang cotton in the seven months, boosting the volume of cotton transport by 157.3 percent year-on-year.
From January to July, China-Europe freight trains made 12,988 trips, an increase of 17.6 percent, while China-Central Asia freight trains reached 8,582 trips, an increase of 0.7 percent.
