Ulog Punta Arenas, in conjunction with Senapred and Empresa Portuaria Austral (Epaustral), organized a dangerous goods spill drill inside Mardones Dock, a strategic point for the logistics-port connectivity of the Magallanes Region, in the Port of Punta Arenas.
The exercise aimed to evaluate and strengthen emergency response capabilities, allowing for the identification of strengths and areas for improvement in the protocols, operational processes, communication, and decision-making of the participating institutions.
The activity involved simulating an incident related to a spill of liquid sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), caused by a failure in the shut-off valve of the isotank equipment transporting the product. The emergency triggered an alarm for a potential spill of 22,000 liters of hazardous material inside Mardones Dock.
This drill allowed for the evaluation of the response procedures of Ulog Punta Arenas as a logistics operator, Empresa Portuaria Austral as the port administrator, and Ultraport as an operator, as well as the coordination and reaction capacity of the various emergency teams involved, such as the Fire Department's Hazmat Unit, Carabineros (Chilean police), and SAMU (emergency medical service), under the coordination and supervision of Senapred.
Diego Muñoz, Ulog's Head of Logistics Business, commented that "this activity is fundamental for strengthening and optimizing emergency protocols, reinforcing coordination among institutions, and contributing to ensuring the safety of people, the community, and the environment."
Ulog concluded the action by thanking all participating institutions for their commitment to the activity, reaffirming the importance of prevention and comprehensive risk management to effectively and coordinately face potential emergency situations.
