Evergreen Marine announced the integration of smart monitoring technology into 58,000 containers, which are currently equipped with sensors capable of transmitting information on temperature, humidity, and cargo status to a control center.
The Taiwanese shipping company presented the solution during a trade fair, emphasizing that quality control of goods is not limited to keeping them refrigerated but requires permanent supervision during transport.
According to the company, the smart containers can issue alerts when temperature variations, unauthorized access, or failures in any of their components are detected. The collected information allows management teams to monitor both the cargo status and equipment operation, helping to reduce disruptions during transport.
Initially, the technology is being prioritized for the transport of high-value products and perishable goods, where preservation conditions and traceability are particularly relevant.
Evergreen Marine also noted that the data obtained from the containers can be shared with third parties, including customs authorities, which could help streamline inspection and clearance processes for goods.
The expansion of this technology occurs in a context of increasing digitalization of container shipping. Around 8.7 million smart containers have been built or updated during 2026, while industry estimates suggest that more than 30% of containers worldwide could be automated by 2027.
