The Provincial Presidential Delegation of Los Andes announced the reopening of the Cristo Redentor Integrated Border Pass, but it has been exclusively enabled for the transit of land cargo in both directions.
Furthermore, authorities agreed to extend the validity of winter hours during September due to the persistence of unstable weather conditions in the high mountains.
The decision was made after a meeting between the coordinations of the Cristo Redentor System Committee of Chile and Argentina, where technical reports on safe transitability and climatic conditions provided by the road authorities of both countries were evaluated.
On Monday, August 31, the restart of operations suffered a delay due to a mild frontal system recorded in the early morning in the mountain range. Consequently, the operational window for heavy transport was set between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM Chile time (11:00 AM to 9:00 PM Argentina time) in both directions.
For reasons of road safety and to safeguard cargo flow, authorities confirmed that the pass will not be enabled for other types of vehicles, such as private cars or passenger buses.
Extension of Winter Schedule
Regarding operations for the coming weeks, the binational organizations decided to extend the winter schedule scheme - which includes a 12-hour daily operational window - starting from Tuesday, September 1.
This measure will remain in effect until weather forecasts stabilize and guarantee the necessary safety conditions to operate on a continuous 24-hour schedule.
The coordination of the border complex specified that the dates and time slots for the reopening of tourism and light vehicle traffic will be communicated in due course once transitability conditions on the international route have normalized.
