• This action will allow progress in the reorganization of the Container Terminal, freeing up surface area in a context of strong increases in container traffic and the forecast that this traffic will continue to rise.
• The demolition of these eight silos adds to the removal of another eight silos between 2015 and 2019, which has resulted in less visual impact, gained port space, and therefore, an improvement in the loading and unloading of goods.
The Port of Vigo is taking a decisive step in its plan for space transformation and optimization. The Port Authority has just awarded the demolition of eight cement silos located at the Container Terminal, which will free up an approximate area of 6,000 square meters, key for the operational efficiency of the port area.
The main objective of this intervention is the regeneration of the esplanade currently occupied by these eight silos to meet the growing logistical needs of the terminal, freeing up surface area in a context of strong increases in container traffic, which will hit a new historic high in 2026 with an increase of close to 5%, and the forecast that this traffic will continue to rise.
Once the works are awarded, the silos will be completely emptied and subsequently demolished, after which the new esplanade will need to be prepared to be operational as soon as possible. The maximum execution period for the work is eight months, although the aim is to accelerate the works as much as possible so that the surface area is available by spring 2027.
The demolition of these eight silos adds to the removal of another eight silos between 2015 and 2019, which has resulted in less visual impact, gained port space, and therefore, an improvement in the loading and unloading of goods.
However, this intervention is not an isolated action, but rather part of an ambitious reorganization plan that seeks to gain efficiency in every square meter of the port facility.
The liberation of this space is the first piece for a larger project: the construction of the new Border Control Post (PCF), with which the Port of Vigo will guarantee a substantial improvement in inspection services and foreign trade agility, consolidating its position as a reference in the Atlantic arc.
