APM Terminals Begins Construction of Laldia Terminal in Chattogram, Bangladesh

APM Terminals officially marked the commencement of construction for APM Terminals Laldia in Chattogram, representing the transition of one of the largest public-private partnership investments in Bangladesh's history, from agreement signing to implementation.

The APM Terminals Laldia project is being built in collaboration with the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) and local partner QNS Container Services Ltd, with an investment of USD 550 million.

Romesh David, CEO of APM Terminals Laldia, stated that "the start of works at Laldia represents a promise turned into reality. We are building much more than a terminal, offering Bangladeshi exporters access to deeper waters, larger vessels, cleaner operations, and a world-class gateway, while the asset remains firmly in Bangladeshi hands. This is what a true alliance between two nations looks like: Danish expertise and investment, Bangladeshi ambition, and a shared commitment to decarbonized and future-ready trade."

APM Terminals Laldia will be entirely designed, financed, built, and operated by APM Terminals and its partners, a pioneering model in Bangladesh's port sector. Crucially, the port asset remains in Bangladeshi hands at all times, ensuring the country retains ownership of its strategic infrastructure while benefiting from top-tier private investment and extensive operational expertise.

Once operational in 2030, the terminal will add over 800,000 TEU of annual handling capacity to Bangladesh's port infrastructure, alleviating congestion in Chattogram and strengthening supply chain reliability for key drivers of the export economy, including textiles, apparel, and manufacturing.

Designed with a deeper draft and an expanded quay, the APM Terminals Laldia terminal will enable the Port of Chattogram to receive container vessels of up to 6,000 TEU, more than double the current limit of approximately 2,800 TEU. The ability to receive larger vessels translates into greater efficiency through improved turnaround times and reduced logistics costs.
