Antofagasta International Terminal (ATI) recorded 38% fewer operational closures during the first half of 2026, with a 43% reduction during the winter season (June to August). This favorable result for port activity is due to the increase in the wave height threshold, which rose from 1.60 to 1.65 meters.
The company highlighted that, in July alone, closure days fell from 10 to 2.1, which has benefited the regional logistics chain in Antofagasta, closely linked to large-scale mining.
It is worth mentioning that port closures are determined and authorized by the Maritime Authority, in accordance with wave conditions and criteria established by regulations, with the focus on safeguarding the safety of people and port operations.
The General Manager of Antofagasta International Terminal (ATI), Mark Bindhoff, explained that this is the result of coordinated work with the Maritime Authority, which allowed the operational wave height threshold to be raised from 1.60 to 1.65 meters, and efforts are underway to reach the goal of 1.75 meters, which will strengthen the service and, consequently, the national economy.
"By increasing the wave height, we strengthen the continuity of our operations, always considering the safety criteria established by the maritime authority. Having greater site availability allows us to respond better to the needs of our clients and contribute to the logistics chain with greater efficiency and robustness," Bindhoff remarked.
Bindhoff also highlighted the increased operational availability achieved during July, which allowed for a reduction in the impact on port activity, favoring greater continuity in vessel service and cargo transfer.
"This translates into a more reliable service for clients, with fewer interruptions and a better capacity to respond to the needs of foreign trade," he specified.
