Officials from the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO), led by its President, Ansis Zeltins, and its Secretary General, Isabelle Ryckboost, visited the Port of Algeciras to learn firsthand about the latest developments in the Strait basin, as well as the impact that community regulations such as the so-called ETS are having on its results. This regulation is already causing diversions of shipping lines and investments to third countries, as confirmed by the State Ports Observatory.
In addition to holding various working meetings with the President and the General Director of the Port Authority of Algeciras (APBA), Gerardo Landaluce and José Luis Hormaechea, respectively, the European and Algeciras delegations participated in a session with Professor David Criekemans to address how the current geopolitical situation is affecting the activity of European ports.
The ESPO delegation toured the TTI Algeciras terminal in Isla Verde Exterior, where its CEO, Alonso Luque, presented the expansion plans for the semi-automatic terminal. Construction of the superstructure will begin shortly to add 16 new hectares, aiming to reach an annual capacity of 2.1 million TEU in a first phase.
