The Port Authority of Almería (APA) closed the first half of the year with very positive data from the ports of Almería and Carboneras regarding port movement, with a 10.3% increase compared to the same period in 2025, reaching 3,272,416 tons, also being the fifth of the 28 authorities in the national port system to register the highest growth.
The increase is mainly due to the transit of gypsum in both ports managed by the APA, which, as a whole, amounts to 1.8 million tons, a 23.6% increase.
"The balance for the first six months of the year is very positive, and we hope that, with the investment effort we are undertaking from the port authority to improve port facilities and infrastructure, in the medium term we will register greater increases in traffic, which will benefit both the port authority and the provincial economy," stated the president of the APA, Rosario Soto.
With the half-year data, the Port Authority of Almería is positioned as the seventh in Spain for exports, with just over 2 million tons of merchandise, representing a 17% increase over the period from January to June 2025. In this case, the APA leads solid bulk shipments abroad with 1.8 million tons, which represents a 20.3% increase compared to the first half of last year.
The APA ports have the competitive advantage of proximity to the main gypsum quarries, making them their natural outlet to foreign markets. The province of Almería accounts for 70% of gypsum production in Spain, being a European leader; furthermore, it is gypsum with a purity that is highly demanded internationally.
"This geostrategic location of our ports, together with the investment we are executing in port works, such as the expansion of the Pechina Dock in the Port of Almería, and the revitalization of what was the Endesa terminal in Carboneras, make the growth forecasts for solid bulk traffic, specifically gypsum, quite optimistic for the coming years," Soto also declared.
