Santander, August 17, 2026. The president of the Port Authority of Santander (APS), César Díaz, reported this morning on the "good progress" of the works for the incorporation of part of the Wissocq industrial estate into the port's operational area, which are now facing the final touches of the first phase.
By the end of the month, he added, the APS will have 20,000 new square meters, which are added to the 3,700 already operational since the second half of July, in an area of the industrial estate that is integrated into the closed port enclosure, increasing the capacity of the Port of Santander.
The works of this first stage include the demolition of four abandoned industrial warehouses, the existing enclosure, and the construction of a new one, as well as the leveling and paving of the land. In this way, the separation that existed between the industrial estate and the port facilities is eliminated, which limited operations in the movement of goods, since transport flows required additional routes.
With this action "we will make better use of the public port domain, reduce unnecessary displacements, improve efficiency in goods management, and reduce operational costs," explained Díaz.
Second phase of expansion
In parallel, this week begins the second phase of the process of incorporating land into the Port's closed enclosure. This space, located in the northern area adjacent to the current ZAL enclosure, will generate another 20,000 new square meters.
At the same time, some of the old sheds in the Wissocq industrial estate that are not suitable for merchandise storage will be demolished, thus gaining another 6,200 square meters.
In total, the two phases into which the global intervention has been divided account for a total of 50,000 square meters of new port surface and represent an investment by the APS of 6.3 million euros.
This action, as a whole, "will allow for new esplanades mainly intended for the storage of general merchandise and the development of logistical activities linked to port traffic, increasing the Port's capacity to respond to the needs of our clients, to increases in activity, and to the establishment of new projects," assured the president of the APS.
Díaz added that, in addition to this operation, other initiatives such as the expansion of the automobile silo or the recovery of disused port land - such as the curvilinear triangle - have also increased the spatial capacity of the Cantabrian infrastructure.
In this sense, he assured that "we constantly generate new land to improve the development conditions of current traffic and, at the same time, always be prepared to welcome new business opportunities that arise."
"Our goal is to provide the industrial and productive sector with the best opportunities for access to international markets with competitive costs and to increase our contribution to GDP and employment in Cantabria" - 14% and 11%, respectively - he concluded.
