Ports of Stockholm reported that all cargo segments recorded growth during the first half of the year compared to the same period last year. This includes containers, bulk cargo, ferry shipping, and railway wagons.
During the first half of the year, the volume of cargo transported by ferry increased by just over 3%, reaching approximately 3.1 million tons. Container movements rose by 14% compared to the same period last year.
"The positive development in both container traffic and Ro-Ro vessel traffic demonstrates the importance of maritime transport for the supply of goods in the region. Transporting more goods by sea creates the conditions for efficient and sustainable transport flows to and from Stockholm," stated Johan Wallén, Commercial Director of Ports of Stockholm.
Alongside this, the volume of bulk cargo increased by 6%, while the number of railway wagons rose by 17%, to almost 3,400, even before the data for the last quarter was published.
Ports of Stockholm is one of the largest passenger terminals in the world and one of the largest cargo ports in Sweden. Each year, more than seven million ferry and cruise passengers, and over seven million tons of cargo transit through its facilities.
