ABS issued a Basic Design Review (BDR) certification to Hanwha Ocean for a standardized floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) unit design developed for the deepwater market of South America and West Africa.
The certification covers Hanwha Ocean's front-end engineering design (FEED) for the floating production, storage, and offloading platform and reflects ABS's review of the main design documentation and technical standards of the unit in key systems, including the hull, superstructure, and mooring system. ABS also granted preliminary approval for the FPSO, which includes design features incorporated to meet Sustain-2 certification requirements.
Additionally, ABS issued a Statement of Fact on Hanwha Ocean's Project Sustainability Execution Plan (PSEP), which extends the sustainability framework to systematic project execution, linking sustainability requirements with engineering deliverables, key performance indicators, responsibilities, and verification evidence.
The design has been conceived as a standardized and reproducible floating platform, which enhances the efficiency and scalability of traditional FPSO development methods. Hanwha Ocean plans to apply this design to large-scale projects in South America and West Africa, where deepwater field development activity continues to boom.
"We are proud to support Hanwha Ocean in advancing its FPSO standardization strategy for the South American and West African markets. These areas are key points for global deepwater production activity, and ABS has the technical knowledge and regional presence necessary to support clients at every stage of development in that market," stated Matt Tremblay, ABS Senior Vice President, Global Offshore Markets.
This certification follows Hanwha Ocean's completion of an independent preliminary study on basic engineering (pre-FEED) for deepwater oil and gas fields in West Africa, for which ABS issued an approval in principle.
Together, both programs represent Hanwha Ocean's strategy to develop a portfolio of standardized FPSO designs in the world's major deepwater production markets, reducing project execution times and improving cost competitiveness through proven design platforms.
