Twenty-five people lost their lives and five were injured in a fire that broke out aboard the dry bulk carrier Ocean Melody as it was undergoing repair work at Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Co. on 10 September.

The incident occurred at around 11:15 a.m. local time. There were around 42 people on the vessel carrying out inspections at the time. During the incident thick smoke billowed from the vessel as it remained moored.
In the subsequent rescue efforts, 12 people were rescued safely and five others who were injured were rushed to hospital. The remaining 25 people were later found dead. The fire was extinguished by 2:30 p.m.
The bulk carrier was brought to the Qingdao shipyard on 31 August and was in port for repairs and inspections. The cause of the fire is not yet known and investigations have been opened into the incident.
The Ocean Melody is a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier that was built in 2006. The vessel has a length of 190 metres, a beam of 32.2 metres, and a gross tonnage of 31,279.
