Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) held a christening ceremony at Hanwha Ocean's Geoje shipyard in South Korea for the world's first LNG carrier equipped with two units of the Wind Challenger wind-assisted propulsion system.
The vessel will be delivered to Chevron Corporation (Chevron) at the end of September under a long-term charter contract.
The Wind Challenger system is expected to reduce fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional propulsion.
Molly T. Laegeler, President of Chevron's Supply and Trading division and godmother of the vessel, officially named it Fujin Sailor.
Makoto Inomoto, Executive Officer responsible for MOL's LNG and Ethane business, stated, "I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Hanwha Ocean for their strong technical support in realizing the innovative installation of the Wind Challenger on the vessel, as well as to Chevron for their understanding and cooperation in making this project possible. The Fujin Sailor plays a crucial role in ensuring stable energy supply while driving efforts to reduce the environmental impact of LNG transportation."
"Through the installation of wind-assisted propulsion technology, this vessel represents a new milestone in LNG carrier innovation and is expected to contribute to greater integration of new technologies to support greenhouse gas management in LNG transportation," the executive added.
The vessel is the world's first LNG carrier equipped with a wind-assisted propulsion system, and also the first of any type equipped with two Wind Challenger units, and the fourth of a total of 11 MOL Group vessels that have been or will be equipped with Wind Challenger.
